Stay fit and healthy this Holiday

Aside from the Christmas gifts we also think of what we shall set on our dining tables for our family and guests during Christmas. We often think of mouth watering foods and lots of dishes in order to please our loved ones, but i think we should also consider the health benefits of our menu offerings.

A good choice of healthy foods to prepare this holiday season are salads. It can vary from fruit, potato, macaroni, or (the healthier choice) vegetable salads. A salad wouldn't be complete without salad dressings! so here are some examples of salad dressings and how to prepare them:

Honey Mustard Dressing: Prepare ½ cup water, ½ cup olive oil, one teaspoon of mustard powder, 1/8 teaspoon of garlic powder, 2 tablespoons of honey, and a pinch of white pepper. Mix all.

Health Benefits:
Honey is considered a wonderful healing agent for all ages. Some scientists consider honey an amazing antibacterial substance which is comprised of sugar-like glucose and fructose. It contains vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B6, B5, and C) and minerals (magnesium, potassium iodine and zinc).

Parsley Dressing:
3 tablespoons of olive oil, 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and another 2 for chopped parsley, ¼ teaspoon onion powder. Beat the olive oil, lemon juice and onion powder well. Add the chopped parsley.

Health Benefits
: Parsley is among the world’s most popular culinary herbs. It is a powerhouse of nutrients containing high levels of beta carotene, Vitamin B12, folate, calcium, and vitamin C.

Lime, Oil and Garlic Dressing:
¼ teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon of garlic (finely chopped), 2 tablespoons shallots (finely chopped), 1 cup olive oil, 1/3 cup lime juice, and freshly ground black pepper. Use a small bowl and whisk the salt, garlic and shallots in it, together with the lime juice. Continue doing so until the salt is dissolved. Slowly whisk in the olive oil until the mixture is emulsified. Season the dressing with pepper and add a little more lime juice.

Health Benefits:
Olive oil gives good amount of vitamin E which is known to delay the changes in cellular structure and thus delay the signs of aging.

Backyard Salad Dressing:
1 tablespoon honey, 1/3 cup lemon juice, fresh ground pepper, 1 teaspoon of minced fresh tarragon, 2/3 cup olive oil. Dissolve honey in lemon juice then add tarragon and pepper and stir. Add olive oil. Put everything inside a covered jar and shake vigorously to avoid clotting of the mixed ingredients.

Health Benefits:
The ancient Greeks used tarragon to treat toothaches due to its pain-killing properties. Tea made with tarragon and chamomile may be used to treat insomnia. Others even use it to stimulate appetite and relieve indigestion.
