Headless Chicken

I was surfing and blog hopping when an article caught my attention about this rooster that still lived for 18 months after it's head was chopped off. It's a strange story but it's true. The farmer who owns this rooster thought he was just putting dinner on the table when he picked up an ax and beheaded one of his chickens. The story of the chicken became a legend. The chicken was later dubbed as Mike and it's hometown Fruita even celebrated a festival called "Mike the Headless Chicken Day" in honor of one of its most famous citizens.

So how was Mike able to survive? Scientists examined him and determined that Mr. Olsen had not done a very good job at chopping Mike's head off. Most of the head was actually removed, but one ear remained intact. The slice actually missed the jugular vein and a clot prevented him from bleeding to death. Apparently, most of a chicken's reflex actions are located in the brain stem, which was also largely untouched. Mike was also examined by the officers of several humane societies and was declared to have been free from suffering. Mike was fed and watered by inserting an eyedropper directly into his gullet. Sadly, he later choked to death in a motel room.

To know more about the story of Mike the headless chicken visit it's official website at http://www.miketheheadlesschicken.org/

Happy weekend and God bless you all!

My b-day prayer

Today is august 28, 2008 my very special day because it's my birthday!! Well, there will be no special celebration and this day will be like any other day, i'm already in our office to work :) But we'll have dinner in my parents house tonight.

I just want to share how grateful I am that God gave me another year to enjoy life together with my family and friends, i'm thankful for all the blessings God showered me in the past year. And as I face another year in my life my prayer is written in this song: Lead me Lord

LEAD ME LORD

Lead me Lord, lead me by the hand
And make me face the rising sun
Comfort me through all the pain
That life may bring
There's no other hope
That I can lean upon
Lead me Lord Lead me all my life
Walk by me, walk by me across
The lonely road that I may face
Take my arms and let your hand
Show me the way
Show the way to live inside your heart
All my days, all my life

Refrain:

You are my light
You're the lamb upon my feet
All the time my Lord
I need You there
You are my light I (just) cannot live alone
Let me stay
By Your guiding love
All through my life
Lead me Lord
Lead me Lord Even though at times
I'd rather go alone my way
Help me take the right direction
Take Your road Lead me Lord
And never leave my side
All my days
All my life
You are my light
You're the lamb upon my feet
All the time my Lord
I need You there
You are my light I (just) cannot live alone
Let me stay By Your guiding love
All through my life
All through my days Lead me, O Lord Lead me Lord

My most humorous vacation

I was still single when I had my first vacation abroad. The company I worked with gave one week vacation to New York. Since it’s my first time to go outside of our country I was quite nervous and of course too excited. I consider this also as my most humorous vacation. I had a hard time communicating with people because even it was English they use some accents in their speech and I couldn’t understand their language well. Since I couldn’t communicate with them, I just used sign language! Ha ha! In spite of what happened i still enjoyed my vacation.

And speaking of vacation, tomorrow is my birthday and I already received advance greetings from my friends and relatives. One of my cousins even invited me to visit her and her family because we haven’t seen for a long time. And besides she said I need to relax once in a while, I’ve been working for 15 years already. She said when I visit Southern California, I shouldn't miss to get some Knotts berry farm tickets and try their adrenaline pumping roller coaster rides and savor the great food they offer.

I was so excited about this plan so I immediately check some websites to find travel agencies that offers great package tours. And I found Trusted Tours and Attractions as a good choice because they offer affordable packages to a lot of cities across America. You may choose Las Vegas tours, Atlanta tours, Boston tours, Chicago tours, San Francisco tours, and many other. You may also find in their website an online travel guides. The company is offering all kinds of discounts and promotions. If you sign up in their Newsletter you'll have the chance to win a $150 Magellan’s Gift Certificate and this offer runs until August 31, 2008 only. So if you are planning to have a break from the world’s bustling pressures, I suggest you hurry and sign up now!

Penguins online

My son loves to play this online game called Club Penguin and just like him i also like and enjoy this game. Club penguin is not an ordinary game. Here kids can chat and hang out with friends in the guise of colourful, penguin avatars. The founders of Club Penguin create an ad-free, virtual world where children could play games, have fun and interact. As Internet specialists and parents, they wanted Club Penguin to be a place they'd feel comfortable letting their own children and grandchildren visit.

How to play this game? First the players create a penguin, waddle around the island of Club Penguin, and engage in a variety of fun and imaginative activities. Players can chat, send greeting cards, use emotes (emotion icons) or choose from a set of pre-defined actions such as waving or dancing. Users can also play games to earn virtual coins which can be used to buy clothing and accessories or furniture for their igloo. New content, such as games and theme parties, is added every week.

In addition to being a great place to play and have fun, Club Penguin is a great place to learn and grow. On Club Penguin, children practice reading, develop keyboarding skills and participate in creative role playing. By accumulating and spending virtual coins earned through game play kids practice math and learn about money management. There's also Club Penguin secret agent and tour guide programs, which help children develop important social skills while gaining a deeper understanding of their role as members of a community.

Club Penguin is free to play, although additional features such as buying clothing or decorating an igloo, require a membership. This has always been my son's request. He really wanted to become a paid member so he could have access to the many features of this online game. Since the game is fun and educational i consider giving him his request. Only with condition that he'll get good grades at the end of the school year.

Grateful for the thorns

It’s another long weekend for me because it's nonworking holiday on Monday here in the Philippines. I’ll be away from my computer and will not be able to blog and hop and drop for two days. Anyway before I’ll have my vacation i want to leave this post something to ponder upon :)

Sometimes to give thanks in every situation in our lives is very difficult. When our bodies are wracked by pain, or we have just learned that we are sick and there’s no cure, or we have lost our job, or a marriage or cherished relationship has been broken, we don’t feel grateful. But we can learn to thank God because He gives us strength when we feel weak. That is why apostle Paul could say in 2 Cor. 12:10, “I take pleasure in infirmities…in distress for Christ’s sake.” And as believers we can be grateful that through such experiences God is accomplishing what is best for us. Even through suffering God is working for our good.

As we surrender ourselves to the Lord remember that He is working in everything to accomplish our ultimate good, we can thank Him even when we are pierced by “thorns.”

Want to share this inspirational song, one of my favorites: The Warrior is a Child and Do I Trust You by Twila Paris.

God bless everyone, happy weekend!

Sci-fi romance

Last Monday being a non-working holiday I had the chance to stay home and have some rest. We just watched WALL-E, my husband got a DVD copy of this movie. My son likes it so much, he even watched it several times. The story is about the planet Earth abandoned by mankind because it had become a virtual wasteland that could no longer support life. When man had already conquered space, the influential multi company, Buy n Large, had wrestled control of Earth's leadership and decided to sponsor a five-year human exodus to outer space-until the planet shall have recovered from the toxic destruction brought about by man's utter disregard for his environment.

While humans lived comfortable and pampered lives onboard massive robot-run spaceship called Axiom, hundreds of thousands of solar-powered robots were left behind to clean up mankind's toxic wastes by compacting unrecycled trash into cubes and stacking them up for easy disposal.

WALL-E is an original and exciting comedy about a robot that's left and remained operational. After hundred of lonely years doing what he was built for, WALL-E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) discovers a new purpose in life. ( besides collecting knick-knacks) when he meets a sleek search robot named EVE (Extra-terrestrial Vegetation Evaluator). EVE comes to realize that WaLL-E has inadvertently stumbled upon the key to the planet’s future, and races back to space to report her findings to the humans who have been eagerly waiting on board the luxury spaceship Axiom for news that it is safe to return home. Meanwhile WALL-E chases EVE across the galaxy and sets into motion one of the most incredible comedy adventures ever brought to the big screen.

Joining WALL-E on his fantastic journey across the universe 800 years into the future is a hilarious cast of characters including a pet cockroach and a heroic team of malfunctioning misfit robots! But it was not all about the funny stuff. There was a message too, the movie reminds us that we have to love our planet, we should keep our environment clean and recycle everything that is reusable so that Earth won’t end up like it was in the movie.

Talk it up!

We wave our arms, we inflect our tone, we reach out, we open our eyes, we lean in ... we do a lot of things to get our message across ... and then when we send a text message we abbreviate -- "OMG PAW KYFC" ... does our real message, our real intent, really get across to our online friends?

They, (whomever 'They' are) say that a picture speaks a thousand words ... hmmmm, maybe if we could combine text and pics, our messages would be more complete ... and a lot more fun.

Is that what a movie producer does, takes a text message and adds pics? How often have you read a book, then seen a movie and come out of the movie saying "that's exactly what the author meant" ... or "not exactly" ... the written word is powerful in the hands of powerful writers, but even that is left open to our interpretation.

Stress and your skin

You’re angry and your face flushes. You’re nervous and itchy hives suddenly appear. Could there be relationship between your emotional state and your stubborn skin problems?

According to Thomas Gragg, M.D. of the Stanford University Medical Center, it is simplistic to say that the way we feel or act causes skin disease. Skin problems have multiple causes, and should always be treated medically. He said that one’s emotional state can play a large part in skin disorders. And dermatologists shouldn’t keep writing prescriptions for cream without also helping to work on the stress in life.

Although dermatologists have long maintained that stress affects skin only recently has strong scientific evidence emerged showing how distress can get under it. The breakthrough findings come from researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine who tracked the actual cellular process that may link today’s emotional turbulence with tomorrow’s skin inflammation. They found that a protein called substance P is secreted by nerve fibers in our blood vessels to become clogged with white blood cells. The result is inflammation.

Below are some common skin disorders and their emotional connections:

HIVES

These raised itchy red spots afflict us at some time in our lives. A sudden, short-lived attack is usually the body’s response to a food or drug allergen- strawberries, shellfish, aspirin and penicillin are frequent offenders. The allergen prompts cells beneath the skin to produce chemical called histamine, which brings on the hives. Stress hormones play a part by dilating blood vessels, which increases blood flow to the skin. When hives are chronic-lingering for weeks, months, even years-usually, so is the stress. Sufferers tend to feel they’re trapped in an insoluble dilemma.

ACNE

Pimple outbreaks are usually associated with teenagers, yet an estimated 17 million women in their 20s, 30s, and 40s struggle with adult acne. Stress is a trigger in more than half of these cases, with outbreaks likeliest to occur two days after the start of some emotional turmoil. Many doctors now believe that excess perspiration caused by stress plays a part.

Women who start with only mild acne can easily get caught in a cycle that results in a more severe case. Stressful events make their acne worse and then the acne itself adds further stress. The increased tension causes nervous fidgeting, and those afflicted touch or pick at their skin, further irritating the breakout.

ITCHING

Sometimes an itch arises, for no discernible reason, on healthy skin. This mysterious itch-unconnected to dryness, mites, or any other physical cause-can be anywhere on the body but most commonly wreaks its misery on the upper back. Most sufferers find itch especially aggravating at night, when they have fewer distractions. Unexplained itching often hints at repressed anger smoldering beneath the surface. Others believe that depression plays a part, as sufferers often respond to an antidepressants even though they may not feel depressed.

ECZEMA

The flakery, blistering, itchy skin of eczema, typically runs in families-along with a susceptibility to hay fever and other allergic disorders. The disease, which can appear at any age, often starts with infancy, disappears between the ages of 2 and 4, then returns in early adulthood. Or, it may last from infancy onward into adulthood, with intermittent flare-ups and remissions.

Eczema is known to be less prevalent among breast-fed infants due to the skin contact that accompanies nursing. No one profile firs all eczema sufferers, but they tend to be intensely active, and sometimes compulsively driven. In adults, emotional upsets connected to love, marriage, rejection, or anger are particularly likely to cause flare-ups. For these sufferers, nurturing personal relationship and reducing stress are important goals to work toward relief.

How about you are you suffering from emotional stress today? Do you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above?

Do you know that the greatest cure for stress, emotional problems, worries or any burden can be found in the Word of God?

Matthew 6:24 says, “So never worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

1 Peter 5:7 says, " Turn all your anxiety over to God because he cares for you."

Have a blessed day,

Organic foods

Medical reports show that people with diseases like cancer, hypertension, diabetes, etc increases daily. Because of this more and more people are getting health conscious, aside from keeping a good diet and daily exercises, people are now concern on what kind of food they take. And today organic foods are the ones popular worldwide.

What are organic foods? According to wikipedia, Organic foods are produced according to certain production standards, meaning they are grown without the use of conventional pesticides, artificial fertilizers, human waste, or sewage sludge, and that they were processed without ionizing radiation or food additives. Livestock are reared without the routine use of antibiotics and without the use of growth hormones. In most countries, organic produce must not be genetically modified. Organic food production is legally regulated. Currently, the United States, the European Union, Japan and many other countries require producers to obtain organic certification in order to market food as organic.

How to identify Organic food? Processed organic food usually contains only organic ingredients. If non-organic ingredients are present, at least a minimum percentage of the food's total plant and animal ingredients must be organic (95% in the United States and Australia) and any non-organically produced ingredients are subject to various agricultural requirements. Foods claiming to be organic must be free of artificial food additives, and are often processed with fewer artificial methods, materials and conditions (no chemical ripening, no food irradiation, and no genetically modified ingredients, etc.).
They may also be required to be produced using energy-saving technologies and packaged using recyclable or biodegradable materials when possible.

Consumers interested in organic food should look for non-chemically treated, fresh or minimally processed food. Mostly these can be bought directly from growers. By talking to farmers, seeing farm conditions, and farming activities helps to identify if vegetables or live stocks are organically grown. Some small farms grew vegetables (and raised livestock) using organic farming practices, with or without certification, and the individual consumer monitored. As demand for organic foods continues to increase, high volume sales through mass outlets such as supermarkets are rapidly replacing the direct farmer connection. However, for supermarket consumers, food production is not easily observable, and product labelling, like "certified organic", is relied on. Government regulations and third-party inspectors are looked to for assurance. A "certified organic" label is usually the only way for consumers to know that a processed product is "organic".

To be certified organic, products must be grown and manufactured in a manner that adheres to standards set by the country they are sold in:

These sites focus on the regulation and standardization of organic food/products. With the help of these agencies consumers get the best information and assistance needed to know more about organic foods.

That's all for now, next time I’ll discuss more on the health benefits of eating organic foods.

I'm wishing you the best of health today!

In fact I'm considering of getting my own computer at home to get more online opportunities. But I'm having second thoughts, the money I will use to buy my computer plus the internet connection will just come from salary loan. I'm a bit worried because these are additional monthly expenses for us and I'm wondering if the online opportunities I will get will help me earn enough to cover this additional expenses plus an extra income for our needs.

I need your advice guys, please share your experiences. Should I go on with my plan? Sabi nga ni Kris, Is it a deal or no deal? :)

Thanks in advance.
