Food for the Heart

Want to know a healthy-heart diet? Here’s a list of five foods that help lower cholesterol and manage blood pressure.

1: Blueberries

Blueberries are not only delicious but are also rich in antioxidants. According to the U.S. Highbush Blueberry Council, researchers believe that the antioxidants in blueberries work to reduce the buildup of "bad" LDL cholesterol in artery walls that contributes to cardiovascular disease and stroke. Antioxidants help neutralize harmful byproducts of metabolism called free radicals that can lead to cancer and other age-related diseases. 1 cup serving of blueberries a day is recommended.

2: Salmon

Salmon is one of the best sources of a "healthy fat" called omega-3 fatty acids. Oily fish such as salmon (as well as mackerel, herring, and sardines) contain omega-3s. This fat is believed to reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease by lowering the levels of triglycerides in the body -- blood fats linked to heart disease and diabetes. Research has also found that omega-3 fatty acids prevent blood clots by making platelets less likely to clump together and stick to artery walls.The American Heart Association recommends eating at least two servings of fish (especially oily fish like salmon) at least twice a week; a serving is between 3 oz and 6 oz.

3: Soy Protein

Soy protein is a good alternative for red meat; rich in omega-3 fatty acids, protein, vitamins, and minerals, it's also lower in fat and higher in fiber than many meat choices. Studies show that soy protein, when eaten with a healthy low-fat diet, lowers cholesterol. Researchers found that people who ate a diet of several cholesterol-fighting foods lowered their cholesterol as much as people who took medicine. Both the FDA and the American Heart Association encourage eating at least 1 oz (28 grams) of soy protein daily. You can get your soy from soybeans, soy nuts, soy milk, soy flour, energy bars, fortified cereal, tempeh, and tofu.

4: Oatmeal

A half-cup daily serving of oatmeal contains only about 130 calories while delivering 5 grams of heart-healthy fiber that helps to lower cholesterol and keep body weight to a healthy level. Another benefit of oatmeal is that it will fill you up and likely keep you filled until lunchtime, so you're not tempted by unhealthy snacks. Oatmeal and other whole grains such as whole wheat, barley, rye, millet, quinoa, brown rice, and wild rice also help reduce the risk of diabetes, which in itself is a risk factor for heart disease. The daily recommendation for fiber intake is between 21 and 38 grams, depending on your sex and age, according to the American Dietetic Association.

5: Spinach

This dark green, leafy vegetable (and its cousins such as kale, Swiss chard, broccoli, and collard greens) is high in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that may protect against cardiovascular disease; it's also a source of omega-3 fatty acids. Spinach is also rich in folate, folate helps reduce the blood levels of the amino acid homocysteine. An emerging risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease is a high level of homocysteine. Eating a cup a day of your favorite dark green, leafy vegetable is recommended.

Daughter needs diet control

I’ve been doing a lot of research to find the best diet pill for me, but now I think I should include in my search an appetite suppressant for my daughter. I asked her many times to control her diet, as much as possible I want her to do it the natural way ‘cause she’s only twelve years old. I don’t want her to take any pills ‘cause she’s too young for it. I kept telling her I’m not with her most of the time to remind her about her eating habit so it’s up to her to discipline herself but she doesn’t listen to me. Oh well, I know I have to be patient with her, she needs my guidance so I won’t give up on her. In time I’m sure she’ll realize the importance of having good looks and most of all a healthy body.

How's your weekend?

How’s your weekend everybody? Are you one of those who enjoyed weekend at the beach with family or friends? Well, it’s really hot here in the Philippines so a lot of pinoys are spending their weekend at the beach or resorts while others are travelling to a cooler places like Baguio or Tagaytay. Since we didn't go to the beach or resort this weekend my son, nephew and nieces just enjoyed the cool water in this inflatable pool yesterday.

But this coming Sunday we’ll have a family weekend getaway to celebrate my brother and nephew's birthdays. We've been waiting for this so everybody's excited.

By the way if you’re one of those people who loves travelling a lot, you might want to consider getting a travel insurance. Travel insurance quotes are available online so it’s just a click away. As I said in my previous post, I really wanted to travel around the world, so aside from saving money for my future travel expenses, i’m also preparing on travel related matters such as having a travel insurance.

Weekend inspirations: There Is A Season...

For everything there is a season,

And a time for every matter under heaven:

A time to be born, and a time to die;

A time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;

A time to kill, and a time to heal;

A time to break down, and a time to build up;

A time to weep, and a time to laugh;

A time to mourn, and a time to dance;

A time to throw away stones, And a time to gather stones together;

A time to embrace, And a time to refrain from embracing;

A time to seek, and a time to lose;

A time to keep, and a time to throw away;

A time to tear, and a time to sew;

A time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

A time to love, and a time to hate,

A time for war, and a time for peace.

A Tearjerker

A friend send this email to me this morning and i thought of sharing this inspiring story with you. Here it goes:

A Boy Singing to his little sister.....
You are My Sunshine, My only Sunshine'

Like any good mother, when Karen found out that another baby was on the way, she did what she could to help her 3-year-old son, Michael, prepare for a new sibling. They found out that the new baby was going be a girl, and day after day, night after night, Michael sang to his sister in mommy's tummy. He was building a bond of love with his little sister before he even met her.

The pregnancy progressed normally for Karen, an active member of the Panther Creek United Methodist Church in Morristown, Tennessee. In time, the labor pains came. Soon it was every five minutes, every three, every minute. But serious complications arose during delivery and
Karen found herself in hours of labor.

Would a C-section be required? Finally, after a long struggle, Michael's little sister was born. But she was in very serious condition. With a siren howling in the night, the ambulance rushed the infant to the neonatal intensive care unit at St. Mary's Hospital, Knoxville, Tennessee. The days inched by. The little girl got worse. The pediatrician had to tell the parents there is very little hope. Be prepared for the worst.

Karen and her husband contacted a local cemetery about a burial plot. They had fixed up a special room in their house for their new baby but now they found themselves having to plan for a funeral. Michael, however, kept begging his parents to let him see his sister. I want to sing to her, he kept saying.

Week two in intensive care looked as if a funeral would come before the week was over.
Michael kept nagging about singing to his sister, but kids are never allowed in Intensive Care. Karen decided to take Michael whether they liked it or not. If he didn't see his sister right then, he may never see her alive. She dressed him in an oversized scrub suit and marched him into ICU. He looked like a walking laundry basket.The head nurse recognized him as a child and bellowed, 'Get that kid out of here now. No children are allowed.'

The mother rose up strong in Karen, and the usually mild-mannered lady glared steel-eyed right into the head nurse's face, her lips a firm line. 'He is not leaving until he sings to his sister' she stated. Then Karen towed Michael to his sister's bedside. He gazed at the tiny infant losing the battle to live. After a moment, he began to sing.

In the pure-hearted voice of a 3-year-old, Michael sang:

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine,
you make me happy when skies are gray.'

Instantly the baby girl seemed to respond. The pulse rate began to calm down and become steady. 'Keep on singing, Michael,' encouraged Karen with tears in her eyes. 'You never know, dear, how much I love you, please don't take my sunshine away.'

As Michael sang to his sister, the baby's ragged,strained breathing became as smooth as a kitten's purr 'Keep on singing, sweetheart.' 'The other night, dear, as I lay sleeping, I dreamed I held you in my arms'. Michael's little sister began to relax as rest, healing rest, seemed to sweep over her.

'Keep on singing, Michael.' Tears had now conquered the face of the bossy head nurse.
Karen glowed. 'You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. Please don't take my sunshine away.'

The next day...the very next day.
the little girl was well enough to go home.

Woman's Day Magazine called it The Miracle of a Brother's Song. The medical staff just called it a miracle. Karen called it a miracle of God's love.

'The evidence of God's presence far outweighs the proof of His absence."

Guide for web hosting

My other blog which I’ve applied in a paid post program was declined, the reason was it’s domain and hosting are about to expire. Anyway they say I can re-apply after two months. Since I have no opps to take, I just visit Webhostingchoice.com. This site provides a free research guide to users looking for the right host for their personal or business site.

If you’re new to hosting you don’t have to worry because their live tech support will help you every step of the way. Aside from that they have created a learning area where they explain the basics of web hosting. The prices they offer are budget friendly so there’s nothing to worry as well. Some starts at $4.95 and go as high as $11.95 per year.

Setting up an account is easy. You just have to select your preferred host, create an account using your credit card, change name servers appropriate for your site, upload using FTP and then publish.

So, are you thinking of hosting your own site in your own domain? Visit their site for more web hosting choice information, answers to most common questions about web hosts can be found thru their FAQ page.

Have you read the book The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren? I grabbed a copy of this book together with other inspirational books on sale last year. It's a nice devotional book which offers the readers a 40-day personal spiritual journey, the book presents God's five purposes for human life on Earth. The book is intended to be read as a daily inspiration, with each of the 40 short chapters read on consecutive days. Each chapter contains a personal application section at the end with a "point to ponder," a verse to remember, and a question to consider over the course of that day.

The book's 40 chapters are divided into six major sections, with the following titles:
  • What on Earth Am I Here For?
  • Purpose #1: You Were Planned for God's Pleasure

Thank you God for the Cross

Let me share with you this story written by Tim Miller of The Vine, something to reflect and think about since today is Good Friday.

--o--

"My nine-year-old daughter Jennifer was looking forward to our family holiday.

But she became ill, and a long anticipated day at Sea World was replaced by an all-night series of CT scans, X-rays and blood tests at the hospital.

As morning approached the doctor told my exhausted little girl that she would need to have one more test, a spinal tap.

The procedure would be painful, they said. The doctor then asked me if I planned to stay in the room. I nodded, knowing I couldn't leave Jennifer alone during the ordeal. The doctor gently asked Jennifer to remove all her clothing.

She looked at me with child-like modesty as if to ask if that were alright. They had her curl up into a tiny ball. I buried my face in hers and hugged her. When the needle went in, Jennifer cried.

As the searing pain increased, she sobbed repeatedly, 'Daddy, Daddy, Daddy,' her voice becoming more earnest with each word. It was as if she were saying 'Oh Daddy, please, can't you do something?' My tears mingled with hers.

My heart was broken, I felt nauseated. Because I loved her, I was allowing her to go through the most agonising experience of her life.

In the middle of that spinal tap my thoughts went to the Cross. What unspeakable pain both the Son and the Father went through - for our sake."

But because of the Cross of Christ we have:

(1) Reconciliation. "God… reconciled us to Himself"

(2) Regeneration. "Having been born again"

(3) Resurrection. "Everyone who… believes… I will raise him up at the last day."

Thank God for the Cross!

Do You Want a Relationship with God?

If you want this kind of relationship with God, pray this prayer right now:

Lord Jesus Christ, I believe that you took the pain of the cross to give me new life. I ask you to come into my life and to give me your peace and joy. I confess that I am a sinner -- that I have gone my own way and have done wrong. Please forgive me for my sins. I receive you now as my Lord and Savior. Please fill me with your Holy Spirit. Help me to follow you and to serve you all my life. Thank you, Lord Jesus. Amen.

Haribo gummy candy

Our neighbor arrived yesterday from USA, they gave our kids some chocolates and Haribo gold bears gummy candies. My kids loved the taste of gummy candies, and they asked me if we could buy some more of these candies here. I’m not sure if I can find or buy haribo gold bears here in our country so I just searched for haribo gold bears online store.

I google haribo gold bears and I found the Sugar Stand online candy store. Sugar Stand sells Haribo brand gummy candy, I’ve learned that Haribo has been making their trusty Gold Bears since 1920, but now they have expanded to offer Techno Bears, Alphabets, Gummi Fruit Salads, and even Gummi Fizzy Cola. Haribo sweets have a history that begins in Germany, long before the gummy craze of today. While famous for Haribo gummi bears, the company got its start with dancing bears and licorice sticks. Haribo gummi bears have long been a favorite with candy connoisseurs, who love them for their delicious sweet and fruity taste, their soft and pleasant texture and of course their unique translucent appearance. You can also choose from your favorite fruit flavors and shapes like strawberry, peach, raspberry, and cherry.

By the way, Sugar Stand’s online candy store is open 24/7. You can place your online order anytime through their secure ordering system. They use SSL 128-bit encryption for all transactions making sure your order is secure. In addition, they value your privacy and won’t SPAM your inbox or sell your email address.
